What to expect

Investigative Post is going to be a work in progress for the foreseeable future. This a primer on our website and how else you can follow our work.

investigativepost.org will be updated daily during the work week with at least a couple of new items every morning.

Our most substantial, in-depth content will be investigations, analyses and follow-up stories, which will be featured at the top of our home page. The frequency of these pieces will vary; starting out, we hope to post a major piece at least every couple of weeks. The frequency will increase as we add staff.

We’ll also have a line up of what we term “investigative features,” that will include:

  • Blog posts written by Jim Heaney at least three times a week.
  • Editorial cartoons and blog posts produced daily by Tom Toles for The Washington Post. Tom is one of Buffalo’s most celebrated and decorated journalists whose awards include a Pulitzer Prize.
  • A weekly feature we call Joe Friday which presents “just the facts” in a telling way. The feature will appear on, well, Friday, when else?
  • A weekly Q&A of a newsmaker.

Other features, and we have ideas for a half-dozen or more, will be added as we grow our capacity to produce them.

Investigative Post has a strong social media component, part of our effort to build a community around our work.

We’ll tweet daily and post them on our home page. We invite you to follow us. We’ll also be a regular presence on Facebook, and we encourage you to “like us.”

We also encourage comments on our work and once a week we’ll highlight the best of what we’ve received.  We’re striving for intelligent dialogue and require users to comment via Facebook. Here’s our commenting policy.

We encourage news tips and hope to engage readers in crowdsourcing projects in the near future.

OK, that’s the website. You can also find our work in four media outlets with whom we are sharing selected stories.

WBFO, 88,7 FM and AM970 will produce television versions of many of our stories and Heaney will make frequent on-air appearances.  Audio clips will be posted, on investigativepost.org, after their broadcasts.

Artvoice will publish a weekly column by Heaney, based on a blog post, and publish stories periodically.

The Buffalo News will publish analyses periodically in the Viewpoints section of the Sunday paper.

We expect to partner with a local television station, as well, and are close to announcing a deal.
