Double your donation to Investigative Post
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is matching donations of up to $1,000 made to Investigative Post through Jan. 19.
Investigative Post is one of 57 nonprofit news organizations the Knight Foundation has selected to provide matching funds.
“The desire for quality journalism and in-depth reporting is clear, as more and more people turn to nonprofit outlets for information they can trust,” said Jennifer Preston, Knight Foundation vice president for journalism.
“With this effort, we are hoping to drive awareness and expand the donor base for nonprofit news organizations, big and small, that are producing journalism in the public interest. To continue their work, these news organizations need a passionate, dedicated community of supporters,” Preston said.
Jim Heaney discusses the Knight News Match
The Knight News Match will provide Investigative Post and other participating news organizations with up to $25,000 in matching funds for donations received through Jan. 19.
“This is a unique opportunity for our supporters to double their donation,” said Jim Heaney, editor and executive director of Investigative Post.
In addition to reaching out to prospective donors, Investigative Post will soon announce plans for an online silent auction of an original Tom Toles cartoon drawn by the Pulitzer Prize winner of The Washington Post. A fundraising event Jan. 18 at Allen Street Hardware has been scheduled in which Heaney will moderate a panel discussion on social justice in the era of Donald Trump.
Investigative Post is the only news organization in Western New York dedicated exclusively to watchdog journalism. It distributes its work on InvestigativePost.org and through partnerships with WGRZ TV, 2 On Your Side, the NBC affiliate for Buffalo; WBFO, Buffalo’s NPR News Station; The Capitol Pressroom, heard on 20 public radio stations around the state, including WBFO, and The Public, WNY’s alternative newsweekly.
Investigative Post’s reporting has been cited for excellence in six journalism and other award competitions this year alone, including the Edward R. Murrow Award. Spree magazine this spring lauded Investigative Post in its “Best Of” issue for “drawing public attention to issues that could work against the public good and prompting activism around those issues.”
Investigative Post’s reporting has had considerable impact. Most recently, its coverage of the Buffalo Billion program lead to a criminal investigation by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara that culminated in the indictment of nine state and business executives on corruption charges. Bharara cited Investigative Post’s reporting and declared:
“A lot of the greatest work that prosecutors and watchdogs do comes from the work that journalists do and I would encourage anyone who’s able to fund investigative journalism to spend money on it because it’s money well-spent and it’s good for the public.”
Investigative Post also exposed a lead poisoning epidemic in Buffalo’s inner-city that promoted city and county officials to take action and a lack of training by Buffalo police to avoid Ferguson-type situations.
Donors can contribute by making a one-time donation or joining Investigative Post as an ongoing member. Contributions are tax deductible, as Investigative Post is a 501 (c)(3).
Checks can be mailed to Investigative Post at 487 Main St., Suite 300, Buffalo, N.Y. 14203.
Contributions can be made online by making a donation or joining as a member, which provides discounts to our event series.
Donations must be made by Jan. 19 to be eligible for the Knight match.
