Investigative Post announces benefit dinner

Investigative Post is hosting its second annual gala Oct. 19, featuring a Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times editor as keynote speaker.

Sarah Cohen is a Buffalo native whose career has included editing stints at both The Times and Washington Post. She is the immediate past president of Investigative Reporters and Editors, the world’s largest professional organization of investigative journalists.

Joseph Finnerty, a First Amendment attorney, will be honored at this year’s dinner for his contributions to journalism, including the invaluable role he has played in the launch and growth of Investigative Post.

The benefit dinner returns to the Hyatt Regency after a well-attended inaugural gala that featured Margaret Sullivan of The Washington Post as keynote speaker. Prices for this year’s dinner start at $50 for individual tickets and $1,000 for tables. Maryalice Demler, news anchor at WGRZ, returns as master of ceremonies.

“Last year’s gala was a great success and we’re looking to build off that,” said Jim Heaney, Investigative Post’s editor and executive director. “Now, more than ever, it’s important for the community to support the kind of in-depth, fact-based journalism that we produce.”

Investigative Post is a Buffalo-based nonprofit investigative reporting center that distributes its reporting in collaboration with WGRZ TV News, WBFO, The Public and The Capitol Pressroom. It produces select content for a number of other news outlets, including the Albany Times Union and the Niagara Gazette.

Last week, Spree magazine named Investigative Post’s reporting staff the best print journalists in Buffalo. It’s reporting on lead poisoning and toxic landfills has been cited for excellence in recent months in state and national journalism contests.

Investigative Post is hosting a fundraiser this Friday at Sportsmen’s Tavern featuring Tom Toles and the Outlyers. Tickets are $20 and available online or at the door.
