Apparently, crazy politics sells
The crazier Donald Trump gets, the more Americans lean toward the GOP. The Daily Beast just reported that an analysis of Gallop poll results found 48 percent lean Republican, vs. 45 Democratic. For perspective, back in 1992, Dems held a 52 to 40 percent edge, narrowed to 48-43 percent in 2000.
Meanwhile, the Pew Research Center reported in April a dead heat among registered voters, with 49 percent leaning Democratic compared with 48 percent Republican. Pew’s benchmark year of 1994 found Republicans held a 51-47 percent edge.
Pew last week reported polling results that included 88 percent of Republicans favoring mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that women under 30 are twice as likely to be liberal than conservative. Thirty percent of young men, on the other hand, identify as conservative, vs. 25 percent as liberal.
Ken Kruly, in his Politics and Other Stuff, bemoans the lack of competitive races for elected office in Erie and Niagara counties. The problem is especially acute in Niagara County, where Kruly reported: “There are no contested state or local elections.”
New York Focus reports that Gov. Kathy Hochul has failed to clean up the mess at the state parole board. In fact, she’s made things worse.
I’m sure glad I don’t live in Florida anymore. Take a look at these pictures. Yeah, we get snow. Big whoop.
Who are the enemies of the people, as in threats to democracy and addressing climate change? A new report puts Amazon, Meta and Tesla at the top of the list.
I know it’s trashy and salacious, but oh, so much fun. That is, reports about the dalliance between RFK Jr. and New York Magazine writer Olivia Nuzzi.
Saturday Night Live kicked off its 50th season the other night. I remember when it used to be funny and featured good bands. (Am I sounding like a grouchy old man?) Anyway, here’s an oldie but goodie.
