Jim Heaney

Jim Heaney is editor and executive director of Investigative Post. He was an investigative reporter with The Buffalo News from 1986 to 2011 and a reporter and editor with The Orlando Sentinel from 1980-86. His coverage over the years has focused on economic development, local and state government, politics, education, housing and transportation, and he was an early practitioner of computer-assisted reporting. Heaney has won more than 20 journalism awards and was a finalist for the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting.

If you’re as old as me, you may remember Al Bemiller, a center and guard on the Bills offensive line during the 1964-65 championship years. He played nine seasons for the Bills and was selected to its Silver Anniversary Team in 1984. The bad news keeps coming for legacy media. A growing number of newspapers are shuttering their Washington bureaus. (Jerry Zremsky of The Buffalo News is only part-time.) Industry layoffs have reached “bloodbath” levels. And disgruntled newsroom staffs are staging walkouts left and right. Things aren’t so hot at Lee Enterprises either. Nikki Haley, who a couple of weeks ago, failed to mention slavery as a cause of the Civil War, put her foot in her mouth again last week, declaring “America has never been a racist country.” I guess forcing four million people live in slavery doesn’t constitute as racist. The Washington Post tore her argument to shreds by citing public opinion polls from the 1940s and 1960s. No follow up to OTB ticket scandal

In the fall of 2021, state auditors criticized representatives of Western Regional Off-Track Betting Corp. for improperly helping themselves to an estimated $121,000 in tickets for professional sports games, concerts and other shows, as well as thousands of dollars in food and drinks they consumed while taking in the action.
