Report details Tesla’s solar struggles

Published by

Tesla and state economic development officials have long treated activity at the company’s plant in South Buffalo as a state secret. Aside from an annual report listing Tesla’s total investment and employment in Buffalo, company and state officials have been loath to clue the public in on what exactly is going on at the factory. The lack of transparency comes despite a state investment of $959 million to build and equip the plant, on the promise it would spawn a clean energy sector in Western New York. That’s changed with the release of a first-of-its-kind report from a global consulting[...]

Podcast: Buffalo’s Common Council candidates

Published by

One thing is certain: Buffalo’s Common Council will soon change. Two members of the current Council — Council President Darius G. Pridgen of the Ellicott District and Masten District’s Ulysees O. Wingo — will not seek re-election. Several candidates are looking to fill those seats, gathering signatures to earn a spot in the June Democratic primary election. There are other candidates looking to challenge Council incumbents, as well. Investigative Post’s Geoff Kelly took a closer look at the candidates and how Buffalo’s Common Council may change. Kelly sat down with Garrett Looker, host of Reporter’s Notebook, to dive into who[...]

Subsidizing a downtown grocery store … again

Published by

In 2019, Buffalo’s plans for a downtown city block seemed to be the platonic ideal of urban redevelopment: turn an old parking lot into hundreds of units of affordable housing and place a grocery store directly next door. And you could say that’s exactly what the city accomplished. Today, the corner of Ellicott and Clinton Streets — right across the street from the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library — features 201 affordable housing units on one-half of the 2.52-acre lot, and Braymiller Market on the other half, downtown’s only full-service grocery store. But completing that project has come at[...]

Roswell’s “unacceptable” response to racism

Published by

Last August, five members of Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s board of directors — including all four Black members — described management’s efforts to address the center’s “history and sentiment of institutional racism” as “unacceptable.” One of the board directors, in a statement to Investigative Post, described that history as “a cancer.” In a letter addressed to Dr. Candace Johnson, Roswell’s president and CEO, and Michael Joseph, the board chair, the five board members objected to management’s response to a report examining “diversity, inclusion and equal opportunity” at the center. The report was commissioned by the Roswell board’s Diversity Committee. With[...]

Monday Morning Read

Subscribe here and you’ll receive WeeklyPost in your inbox first thing Sunday. If you’ve ever wanted to dish on your former employer’s bad behavior to Investigative Post, but couldn’t because you signed a non-disparagement clause, the National Labor Relations Board has delivered good news. In guidance issued this week, NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo said that any non-disparagement clause not “narrowly-tailored” will no longer hold up legally. Vice has a good breakdown here. In other words, our tip line is wide open. You can submit tips here, or via email at investigativepost@proton.me. Chrissy Casilio, aka CrissyCaBoom, said much of her right wing rants on[...]

Not much change afoot for Common Council

Published by

There will be a pair of new faces on Buffalo’s Common Council next year, the result of two incumbents declining to run for reelection. That’s probably as much change as Buffalonians will be permitted — or choose — to vote for. In five of the nine Council districts, the incumbents appear to face no challengers in the June Democratic primary, which generally determines the victor in this one-party town. In the two districts where incumbents face opposition, the challengers face steep odds.  The last time an incumbent lost reelection to Buffalo’s Common Council was 20 years ago. That was when[...]

Yet another subsidy for Moog

Published by

The Erie County Industrial Development Agency on Wednesday rubber-stamped nearly $3 million in tax breaks for Moog, the defense contractor based in Elma. It was the 14th round of assistance from the agency since the 1970s. The IDA has now approved $12.8 million in subsidies for six Moog projects since 2006. Moog, a profitable company that netted $155 million last year, has won federal contracts in the past decade totaling more than $6 billion. The company manufactures parts for fighter jets, missile launchers, rocket ships and submarines. Federal contracts make up about half of its total business, while private aviation,[...]

Heaney discusses Bills stadium on ‘Pressroom

Published by

David Lombardo interviewed Investigative Post Editor Jim Heaney on the latest developments on the Buffalo Bills stadium on The Capitol Pressroom. His remarks drew on the reporting of J. Dale Shoemaker and Mark Scheer. Heaney explained how the project has come up short – costly to taxpayers, remotely located and not designed to meet the green standards common to other NFL stadiums built in the past decade. There’s also the matter of a lease that doesn’t necessarily bind the team to Buffalo for the long-run.
