Heaney wins investigative reporting award

Investigative Post Editor Jim Heaney, whose reporting exposed corruption in the Buffalo Billion program, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Nellie Bly Award for Investigative Reporting. The award, named in honor of the pioneering investigative reporter from the late 19th century, is granted by the Albany-based Museum of Political Corruption. “The judges found much about Heaney’s passion for justice and determination to uncover the truth that mimics Bly’s celebrated career,” according to the museum’s press release announcing the award. Geoff Kelly joins Investigative Post

Geoff Kelly, former editor of The Public and Artvoice, has joined the reporting staff of Investigative Post. “I’m really excited to bring Geoff onboard. Probe into cop drowning voted top story of ’18

An investigation by Daniela Porat that documented how Buffalo police put diver Craig Lehner in harm’s way was voted by readers as Investigative Post’s best story of 2018. Porat’s deeply researched story reported that Lehner, who drowned during a training exercise in October 2017, was not sufficiently trained and equipped to handle the swift currents of the Niagara River. George Nicholas, senior pastor of Lincoln Memorial United Methodist Church, has joined Investigative Post’s board of directors. McLeod joins iPost reporting staff

Marsha McLeod has joined Investigative Post on a reporting fellowship. McLeod graduated with honors in May from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where she was a fellow at the Toni Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism. This summer she worked as an investigative fellow at The Trace, a nonprofit based in New York City that reports on guns and gun violence.
