Donate to iPost and double your money

As Western New York’s only nonprofit newsroom, Investigative Post depends on the financial support of the community to fund our work. Our annual drive is an important source of revenue for us. We’re down to the final week-and-a-half of our campaign. Consider donating today to support Western New York’s only news organization dedicated exclusively to producing watchdog journalism. At a time when our democracy is under threat, and our leaders are less transparent than ever, supporting local journalism has never been more important.  “Love your publication and your attention to the facts,” one donor wrote in a note that accompanied[...]

Lawmakers indicate no review for Bills stadium

Published by

Updated: 5:05 p.m. The Buffalo Bills new stadium is now set to win approval from the Erie County Legislature without completing a full environmental review that’s been required of similar projects around the state. Legislators on Thursday signaled that they would issue a “negative declaration” next week under the State Environmental Quality Review Act, forgoing an Environmental Impact Statement. That would allow the Bills to skip a full environmental assessment.  After more than an hour of testimony and discussion, legislators said they felt comfortable moving forward without an EIS, something that was required for all major league sports venues built[...]

Vote for iPost’s top story of 2022

Published by

Update: Voting is closed. With apologies to David Letterman, here’s our list – in no particular order – of the Top 10 stories we produced in 2022. Geoff Kelly, our senior reporter, produced three of them: Roswell Park’s connection to a Russian oligarch.  Retired supervisors testify in a federal lawsuit that Buffalo police often use the N word. Link Black officers in another lawsuit contend a police captain went on a racist rant. Link J. Dale Shoemaker, who joined the staff this summer, reported on the huge subsidies Amazon received to locate a warehouse in Niagara County and Erie County’s[...]

Erie IDA eyes largest subsidy package in years

Published by

Updated: 2:50 p.m. The Erie County Industrial Development Agency is entertaining a request for the largest package of tax breaks it has awarded in the past five years.  The $11.8 million in tax breaks for Sonwil Distribution work out to $621,000 per new job. In addition to hiring 19 new workers, the company would relocate 22 of its current employees.   But Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, a member of the IDA board of directors, has raised “serious concerns” about the size of the subsidy package, according to a spokesperson. “There is no way I am in favor of $11 million[...]

No environmental review for new Bills stadium

Published by

When major league sports venues are built in New York, they almost always undergo a thorough environmental review before a shovel is put in the ground. That was the case for Yankee Stadium, Citi Field, Barclays Center and USB Arena in New York City. And it was the case for KeyBank Center and Sahlen Field in Buffalo, as well as other minor league baseball stadiums around the state, and a 14,000-seat soccer stadium in Rochester. Yet Erie County officials are poised to give Pegula Sports and Entertainment and the Buffalo Bills a free pass — called a negative declaration —[...]

Hochul has inflated number of stadium jobs

Published by

Gov. Kathy Hochul and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz have repeatedly claimed that 10,000 jobs will be created during construction of the $1.4 billion stadium for the Buffalo Bills.  “I love the fact that this is the largest construction project in Western New York history with 10,000 union jobs,” Hochul said during a visit in April to Buffalo.   It appears, however, that the stadium project will create about 6,800 direct construction jobs statewide, not the 10,000 claimed by Hochul and Poloncarz. That lower estimate was included in an economic impact study commissioned by the Bills. Only by adding “indirect” and[...]

Union complaint filed against Geico

Published by

Geico employees attempting to organize a union at the company’s Amherst office have filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. At issue are two emails the company sent to employees that organizers said amount to “union busting.” In the first email, sent Aug. 12, Mindy Seibold, the regional vice president for Buffalo, and Pete Rizzo, a company vice president, warned employees against speaking with Geico United organizers visiting them at home. Because of the pandemic, organizers previously told Investigative Post, many Geico employees are working from home, meaning that union organizers have been knocking on[...]

Monday Morning Read

Published by

We’ve launched a redesigned website. It builds off the strength of our previous website — easy navigation and a clean, uncluttered design — and adds more visuals and features that point readers to our best work. Our upgrade was informed by market research performed in partnership with the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. They surveyed recipients of WeeklyPost, who said, among other things, that they wanted more graphics, photos and video clips embedded into stories, and guides to direct them to stories by topic. I find the websites of most news outlets to be cluttered messes. We[...]
