Last chance to double your money

Our annual drive is winding down. If you’d still like to contribute, donations must be made by midnight Thursday to be eligible for matching dollars. We’ve had a successful campaign thus far. Last year, match-eligible donations of up to $1,000 totaled $23,312. Those donations this November and December, through Tuesday, come to $35,727. Those donations will be matched, dollar for dollar, by supporters that include NewsMatch, the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, Try-It Distributing and the Mulroy Family Foundation. Meet our new board members

Investigative Post has added five members to its board of directors who represent a cross-section of the community. New members include: Sarah Cohen, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has worked at The Washington Post and New York Times, and who presently teaches data journalism at Arizona State University. Samuel Savarino, owner and CEO of Savarino Companies, and a past and present member of numerous nonprofit boards. Investigative Post has produced 220 stories and other pieces of content in 2020. Our work has ranged from in-depth investigations, follow-up stories and blog posts to podcasts and radio interviews.  Our reporting this year covered topics ranging from misconduct by Buffalo police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, to assorted shenanigans at City Hall and the Western Regional Off Track Betting Corp.  Those stories reached a large audience through our website and partners, starting with WGRZ and including WBFO, WBEN, The Capitol Pressroom and Buffalo Spree. iPost launches two fundraising drives

Investigative Post has launched its annual fundraising drive and this year there are two reasons to donate to Buffalo’s nonprofit investigative reporting center. For starters, donations of up to $1,000 will be matched. Donors get to double their money.  In addition, donations will not only underwrite our current operation but be put towards funding a plan to add reporters and expand our award-winning coverage. Help wanted: muckraking reporters

We’re in the hunt for a couple of experienced muckraking reporters. We’re seeking job candidates with investigative reporting skills and experience producing, or a willingness to learn to produce, stories for online, television and radio. Merrill elected president of Investigative Post

Dr. Michael Merrill has been elected president of the board of directors of Investigative Post. Merrill is medical director, clinical performance management, with Independent Health. Before attending medical school, he worked as a newspaper reporter for three years after graduating from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. “Investigative Post is the most important nonprofit in Buffalo because it puts everybody on notice that if they misbehave, there’s a risk of getting caught,” he said. Jim Heaney made his debut Thursday on David Bellavia’s talk show on NewsRadio 930WBEN. Heaney and Bellavia, in a 41 minute interview, discussed a range of topics, including the M.T. Pockets situation, Mayor Byron Brown, the city’s contract with its police union, and the Western Regional Off Track Betting Corp. The show broadcast in three segments, which are below. Investigative Post teams with UB Law clinic

Reporters face growing resistance from state and local government officials when they seek public records. The state Freedom of Information Law, intended to promote the public’s right to know, is often used by politicians and bureaucrats to delay the release of records. Investigative Post has found that many bureaucracies, including the City of Buffalo and its Board of Education, and especially the State of New York, routinely take much longer to fulfill FOI requests than what’s permitted under law.
